What is trailology?
Trailology is a growing field of academic study.
Trails are everywhere.
Trails lie at the roots of human civilization, transportation systems, and commercial networks. Trails guide our ways of thinking, follow our desires and curiosities, symbolize our lives and conduct, and lead us to dwell on existential questions. Trails connect us with the most pressing issues regarding the future of the planet.
Trails are worth studying, and trailology facilitates their study.

Inaugurated at the 2024 World Trails Conference in Ottawa, the Trailology Collective is an international group of people who study trails. We are natural and social scientists, humanities scholars, and artists. We are trail builders, land managers, and educators. Here is our leadership team.

We make spaces for sharing knowledge about trails.

We share ideas, knowledge, and research about trails in our monthly Zoom meetings. We organize international gatherings. We publish essay collections. We maintain a digital library. Our members create trail research hubs in locations around the world. You can learn more about our work here.
